Distinctive, large, white massive formations, usually in distorted vase forms which can reach 90 cm in diameter (Ref. 865). Reef building, found on gravel and rock substrates (Ref. 92818) at depths between 30 m (Ref. 865) to 300 m (Ref. 92819).

Members of the class Hexactinellida are hermaphroditic. Life cycle: The zygote develops into trichimella larva (free-swimming) before settling down on a substrate where it grows into a young sponge.
