Irregular mass, up to 30 cm across with 8 cm thickness. Partly buried or covered with sediment. Fistules only often visible, with- or withour terminal oscules; sometimes poorly developed or absent. Lumpy, porous surface. External color varies from yellow to orange-yellow or orange-red and red; paler internally. Soft and crumbly consistency. Exudate absent (Ref. 85482).
This is an epibiotic species (Ref. 108813). Attached to hard substrates in shallow lagoons, usually with turtle grass Thalassia testudinum, and deeper waters (Ref. 85482). Also in mangrove ponds (Ref. 86789).

Members of the class Demospongiae are hermaphroditic. Life cycle: The zygote develops into parenchymella larva (free-swimming) before settling down on a substrate where it grows into a young sponge.
