Depth estimate based on Family (Ref. 108635). Stenohaline species ranging from 5 (in Puck Bay, Baltic Sea) to 12 PSU. Adapts to a wide range of temperatures, from freezing in the winter to 30°C in the summers. Occurs in non-tidal basins of a maximum tidal range of 0.1m. Attaches to sea floors overgrown by vascular plants or macroalgae through byssus (Ref. 128498).

Members of the class Bivalvia are mostly gonochoric, some are protandric hermaphrodites. Life cycle: Embryos develop into free-swimming trocophore larvae, succeeded by the bivalve veliger, resembling a miniature clam.
