Western Atlantic: from Potomac River, Virginia, the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean to Florianópolis, Santa Catarina, Brazil. Tropical to temperate.

Intertidal, on bay and nearshore (Ref. 97531). Common on beaches and mangroves. Lives in areas associated with deposition of organic matter; susceptible to freshwater exposure (Ref. 118297). Adults mainly feed on detritus (Ref. 118298).

Members of the order Decapoda are mostly gonochoric. Mating behavior: Precopulatory courtship ritual is common (through olfactory and tactile cues); usually indirect sperm transfer.
