This species can be distinguished by the lack of microscleres and has a wide range of intraspecific color variation (white, tan, and different shades of purple).
Collected within the natural and artifical sciophilous communities of Kāne‘ohe Bay, which includes a piece of dead coral from a patch reef, special research units (ARMS) placed in a shallow reef area, and similar units kept in mesocosms (Ref. 133075).
