						Grows in clusters of small tubes with widths between 2 to 4 cm and heights less than 10 cm, or irregular lobate mass with short broad tubes. Uniformly rugose surface common, at times weakly lumpy.  Both exterior and interior color varies from white to gray, with some having a pinkish tinge.  Soft and compressible consistency.  Compound apical oscules present on each tube with a white membrane.  Spicules absent, instead with algal filaments embedded in spongin (Ref. 85482).  Often attached to gorgonians (Ref. 81728).					
				
				
						
			
			
			
			
				
					Encrusts rocks, shells, dead coral or other sponges, in shallow lagoons and coral reefs (Ref. 85482).  Also found in mangroves (Ref. 86836).

					Members of the class Demospongiae are hermaphroditic.  Life cycle:  The zygote develops into parenchymella larva (free-swimming) before settling down on a substrate where it grows into a young sponge.
