The rust colored algal blooms become large floating mats on the surfaces of infested water bodies. It is known as potential source of renewable liquid hydrocarbons. It's also known to have toxic effects on fish and zooplankton during bloom formation (Ref. 80830). This alga can be found in freshwater, brackish and saline lakes, reservoirs or small pools situated in temperate, tropical and continental zones (Ref. 80846).
