Found offshore, in 15 to 25°C waters (Ref. 356). Forms breeding colonies on oceanic islands. Does not typically trail ships (Ref. 91362). A less specialized kleptoparasite with varied feeding behavior, including surface-seizing. Mimics skuas to successfully kleptoparasitize other seabirds; typically attacks from a lateral plane to frighten its target with sudden aerobatic acceleration achieved by continuous wing flapping. (Ref. 89445). A total of 36 breeding pairs were found with their laying months as follows: Nov 1990 (1), Dec (2), Jan 1991(5), Feb (14), Mar (5), Apr (1), May (3), Jun (1), Dec (1), Feb 1992 (3). Estimated breeding pairs in different Pitcairn atolls are 10,000 in Henderson, <100 in Oeno and 30,000 in Ducie (Ref. 5720).
