Definition of Term

(English) Organism that escaped from domestication and reverted to wild state but remains distinct from other wild species; examples are the wild horses and burros of the West and the wild goats and pigs of Hawaii; fish regularly escape from aquaculture enterprises and may interfere with wild species. May infect farmed fish with diseases, interbreed with wild stocks, or dominate ecosystems. (See also: aquaculture, exotic species, introduced species)
