Conservation Tonga’s main environmental concern is the contamination of groundwater and surface-water supplies by pesticides and leakage from solid-waste dumps. Parks and reserves have been set aside to protect critical plant and wildlife habitats.
Geography and Climate Tonga is an archipelago consisting of 170 islands and islets forming three main groups--Tongatapu Group, Ha‘apai Group, and Vava‘u Group--and several outlying islands. The Tonga Islands lie generally in a long north-south chain. The Tongatapu Group and the Ha‘apai Group consist of low-lying islands of coral formation, while the Vava‘u Group is volcanic and mountainous; some of the volcanoes are active. Tonga has an average annual temperature of about 24°C and receives more than 1,095 mm of rain annually.
