Conservation The coastal ichthyofauna of São Tomé Island is still poorly known.
Geography and Climate Sao Tome and Principe consists of two mountainous volcanic islands. Total surface area is 960 sq. km. The climate is trpical but varies with altitude. The coastal lowlands are somewhat warmer than the central highlands. The economy is centered around plantation agriculture, principally cocoa and copra.

Hydrography Lakes: none of significant size. Rivers, floodplains and swamps: numerous short seasonal torrential rivers only. Reservoirs: none of significant size. Coastal lagoons: none at present, but in the past the mouth of the Malanza River had been barred to form a lagoon varying in area from 0.16 sq. km. during the dry season to 0.80 sq. km. during the rainy season.
