Definition of Term

tubercle
(English) Temporary epidermal projection on head, body, or fins of males of some species which facilitates contact with females during spawning or which is used for defense of territories; common among the Cyprinoidei. Also: wart-like bony plates or bumps in the skin, such as in the Lumpsucker. (See also: epidermis, spawning)
