Diagnosis:  Culmen: 3.7 cm; wing: 24.4 cm (Ref. 356). Large duck; male: black overall; white forehead, nape and base of bill; orange bill; female: dark brown overall; light cheek (Ref. 94965).
Biology:  Surface diving; coastal. Winters from Alaska to Baja California, Nova Scotia to Florida, Gulf of Mexico (Ref. 356).
