Family:  Portunidae (swimming crabs)
Max. size:  15 cm CW (male/unsexed)
Environment:  benthic; marine; depth range 0 - 77 m
Distribution:  Indo-Pacific: from the Red Sea, to Thailand and Philippines to Hawaii and French Polynesia, north to Japan and south to Tanzania, Madagascar and Australia.
Diagnosis:   
Biology:  Only species of Podophthalmus with commercial value. Occurs in coastal (Ref. 117213) and offshore waters (Ref. 343). Subtidal (Ref. 106854). Inhabits sandy to muddy substrates (Refs. 343, 121749). Abundant in muddy flats (Ref. 121750). Shallow infratidal species down to 42 m depth but also found swimming at the surface (Refs. 121747, 121749), especially at night (Ref. 121749).
