Family:  Muricidae (purpuras, murex and rock shells)
Max. size:  15 cm ShH (male/unsexed)
Environment:  benthic; marine; depth range 0 - 340 m
Distribution:  Indo-West Pacific: from East Africa including Madagascar and the Mascarene Islands, to eastern Melanesia; north to Japan and south to Queensland and New Caledonia.
Diagnosis:   
Biology:  Collected for the edible flesh and the elegant shell which is much favoured among collectors. The numerous and long spines provide an efficient protection against predators (Ref. 349). It is also found on the continental shelf; offshore (Ref. 349).
