Family:  Histioteuthidae (jewel squids, umbrella squids)
Max. size:  33 cm ML (male/unsexed)
Environment:  pelagic; marine; depth range 1 - 4846 m
Distribution:  Indo-Pacific, Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea.
Diagnosis:   
Biology:  Caught by nets (Ref. 275). Maximum depth from Ref. 1985. Oceanic and elusive. Has little interaction with the bottom (Ref. 106095). Mainly feeds on osteichthyes, followed by crustaceans (natantian), and occasionally on cephalopods. Bases their diet on pelagic nictemeral migrators (Ref. 106992).
