Ecology of Nautilus macromphalus

Main Ref. Roper, C.F.E., M.J. Sweeney and C.E. Nauen, 1984
Remarks Occurs at depths of 0 to 500 m on the continental shelf and slope. Broken shell washed up on beach (Ref. 88739). Has poor vision; instead, utilizes scent and touch to recognize and look for food. At night, it actively forages at 20 m depth. It adjusts gases contained in its chambered body to facility vertical movement (Ref. 101162).
