Colony: submassive to encrusting, sometimes forming irregular columns; commonly more than 1 m across. Corallites: thin walled, angular. Septa: few. Well developed paliform lobes, commonly forming a conspicuous crown. Color often brightly colored, brown or red, often with green oral discs (Ref. 848).
Occurs in shallow reef environments (Ref. 848) and among rocks (Ref. 102838). Distinctive; colonies are easily recognized (Ref. 130769).
Life cycle and mating behavior

Hermaphroditic (Refs. 113708, 113712). Mature gametes are shed into the coelenteron and spawned through the mouth. Life cycle: The zygote develops into a planktonic planula larva. Metamorphosis begins with early morphogenesis of tentacles, septa and pharynx before larval settlement on the aboral end (Ref. 833).
